Social Evening Function 14 May 2016

SFF Function group photo 2016

Serve Fiji Foundation (SFF) hosted its Annual Fundraising Dinner on Saturday 14 May 2016 at the popular Le Beach Hut Restaurant, 191 Russell Ave, Dolls Point.  The function was a big success judging by the many positive responses from the guests.

SFF is a Registered Charity and has Deductible Gift Recipient status i.e. all donation to SFF of $2 or more is tax deductible.  SFF raises funds in Sydney and supports the benevolent and advancing health activities of the Ramakrishna Mission Fiji (RKM).  SFF has a memorandum of understanding with the RKM that sets out mutually agreed programs to which funds raised will be applied.  These include benevolent activities such as relief after disaster (e.g. Tropical Cyclone Winston Relief for which SFF raised some AUD $22,000); and more significantly supporting the advancing health programs such as supporting doctors at Sarada Medical Centres for which SFF targets an annual amount of $60,000.  All funds raised by SFF are sent to RKM and there is no administration cost as all Committee Members volunteer their time and services, and also make substantial donations.

RKM is a long established Registered Charitable Trust in Fiji and has the capability and infrastructure to take such relief and medical projects.  RKM is very highly regarded by overseas aid agencies such as AusAid, NZ Aid, EU Aid, all of which have given grant to RKM for specific projects.  RKM is also recognised and held in high esteem by Fiji community and the Fijian Government.

The Fundraising Function was attended by around 200 guests and performers.  They enjoyed sumptuous meal prepared by Tejinder Singh and his staff at the Restaurant.  The guests also enjoyed quality red and white wine, which were all donated. The Function was privileged to have a number of significant dignitaries.  The Chief Guest was HE Mr Yogesh Punja, who spoke very eloquently on the trauma being suffered by the community post Tropical Cyclone Winston, highlighting the need for health professionals like psychiatrist, psychologists to help people affected overcome trauma of the experience that they had gone through.

Other dignitaries included prominent Fiji businessmen Vinod Patel and Bachu Bhai Patel, who also represented RKM in their capacities as Board Members of RKM; Mr Alan Crocker of Design 5 Architects, who designed the Universal Meditation Centre in Malolo, Nadi; and representatives of various business sponsors (Canterbury BMW, Quantum Group, Healthwoods Specialists).

The guests of 200 enjoyed performances by Bollywood Sensations, and services of DJ Robert.

Appeal for Cyclone Winston Relief

Ramakrishna Mission, a registered charitable Trust, is mobilizing to undertake initial relief operations to serve the poor, needy people affected by the cyclone:

1.  Medical Relief:

We will open both of our two Sarada Medical Centres (in Nadi Town and Rishikul Sanatan College, Nasinu) to provide free medical relief services to public. We expect people to come with injuries and illnesses that normally follow a cyclone/flood disaster. We plan to provide free consultations, medicines, nursing services for injuries etc. We will explore the logistics of making this service mobile.

2.  Food Security through Distribution of vegetable seeds:

As most of the crops have been destroyed, we expect a major shortage of food items. We plan to provide ~ 10 varieties of vegetable seeds to farmers and households so that people can start growing their own basic vegetables and fruits. The Mission has undertaken this type of relief in 2012 and the impact was very good.
